Comment:
Isospora canis oocyst containing 2 sporocysts with 4 sporozoites each in faecal preparation of dog faeces - 38 x 30 microns. It takes 4 days for the oocyst to sporulate and usually the oocyst is unsporulated when excreted. The dog becomes infected by ingesting a sporulated oocyst which excysts in the small intestine releasing 8 sporozoites or by ingesting a rodent which has the asexual stages in its tissues. The infection is usually asymptomatic but in heavy infections in puppies can cause severe watery diarrhoea but often there are other organisms present too.
